The Future of Inbound Marketing: Email

email marketingAll right, wait a second… How is email the “future” of anything? Email has been around longer than the Internet (at least the Internet as we know it), so what gives?


Here’s the thing: Email has a bright and illustrious future, and in the right hands, it’s still a goldmine. This is why we’ve added it to this series. If you haven’t done much with email up to now, make it your New Year’s resolution to attack your list in 2016. You’ll be glad you did, and here are a few reasons why.


#1—Email is the easiest way to stay in contact with your customers and leads.


“One message to rule them all.” Just hit send and you’re done. If you’ve been developing a list for a while, you have a great opportunity to reach out to a lot of people at once. Don’t just send an email when there’s a promotion. Did you discover a great article about wedding planning that touches on hiring a limo? Share it with your list, as well as on social media.


If you have any doubt that doing any of this will be effective, consider that Facebook only sends your posts to a select number of news feeds. With email, you have the opportunity to reach 100 percent of your list every time. The only trick is getting people to open the messages, and that comes with good headlines and consistent relationship building through the medium.


#2—People are still twice as likely to read an email than they are to respond to a call to action on social media.


Even though social media is huge these days, people are still drawn to their email in ways and numbers that will probably surprise you. You can even test this theory by creating two identical landing pages with different URLs. Send a link to one with your social media posts and send another to your email list, and track which one gets more hits based on reach. That last part is important because a fleeting glance will likely look as though Facebook is more effective, but look more closely at the numbers. If you’re reaching 6000 people on Facebook and getting 120 clicks, you’re way ahead of the game if you get 2000 opens on your email list and “only” get 75.


#3—Email is very mobile-friendly.


Even die-hard texters still have email addresses and use them every day. Smartphone and tablet users now account for more than half of all email activity on the Internet, having edged out desktop and laptop users in 2013, and widening the gap more and more each year. If someone gets an email on their phone they are more likely to open it than if they’re sitting at their desk. This leaves you with the responsibility to make sure your emails look good on mobile. Responsive design doesn’t stop with your website—it has to apply to every way you communicate with people.


Simply put, email is here to stay, and if smartphones have a future, so does email. Don’t neglect it. Use it to your fullest advantage. Email marketing is a powerful weapon that should NOT be left in its holster in 2016.
